Explore the history of Murfreesboro

The city was first developed as an agricultural community, with cotton and tobacco making up the majority of crops. By 1853 it was home to several colleges and academies, earning the nickname “the Athens of Tennessee.” With a population of around 110,000 people, Murfreesboro has become a major center for business, industry, and education.

A visit to Murfreesboro would not be complete without visiting the city’s main historical site, Rosecrans National Battlefield. The site was once a strategic defensive position for Union troops during the Civil War. It’s now a museum dedicated to the events that led up to the war, and visitors can tour the ruins of the fortifications.

Despite the fact that the Civil War devastated much of the South, it didn’t have as big an impact on Murfreesboro as other parts of the country. The town grew in the following decades, and by the early 1900s it was beginning to recover from its wartime devastation.
